Nintendo trumpeted their latest round of LTD sales figures with the news that Nintendo DS has sold more than 21 million units worldwide, and a bewildering comparison to Apple's iPod shipping just a million in that hardware's first 19 months.

The figures add up as follows. U.S. numbers are sourced from The NPD Group, and worldwide numbers are counted by Nintendo themselves.

Nintendo DS

  • Software (U.S.): 15.75 million
  • Software (worldwide): 78.79 million

Nintendo GameCube

  • Hardware (U.S.): 11.2 million
  • Hardware (worldwide): 21.0 million
  • Software (U.S.): 95.14 million
  • Software (worldwide): 192.6 million

Game Boy Advance

  • Hardware (U.S.): 32.97 million
  • Hardware (worldwide): 75.81 million
  • Software (U.S.): 149.58 million
  • Software (worldwide): 335.96 million

Nintendo has sold a total over 375 million hardware units and 2.2 billion units of software. Software franchise sales total over 185 million for Mario, 47 million for Zelda, 12 million for Metroid, 150 million for Pokémon, and 47 million for Donkey Kong.
